Neckline and shoulder construction
The collar is what fails first on a cheap shirt, usually by losing shape or rippling after washing. Look for a ribbed collar with visible stitching and shoulders where the seam sits at the edge of your shoulder rather than drooping down the arm. Ask QC photos for the collar from slightly above, since a rippled neckline is obvious from that angle and invisible from the front.
Colour fastness and the first wash
Dark and saturated colours release dye in the first wash, which is normal and not a defect, but it means shirts should not be washed with light colours that day. Wash cold and inside out to slow fading significantly. If a shirt arrives with an uneven shade across the panels, that is a genuine defect worth raising while the parcel is still at the warehouse.
Print quality checks
Ask for a close frame of the print edge, because lifting and cracking always start at the boundary rather than the centre. Screen prints sit thicker and last longer, while direct-to-garment prints feel softer initially and fade faster. A print that looks perfect flat on a table can still crack across the chest after a few washes, so the edge photo is where the truth is.
