Outerwear sizing is different from tops
A jacket has to fit over whatever you wear underneath, so sizing up is normal rather than a mistake. Measure the chest of the thickest layer you plan to wear beneath it and add allowance for movement. Sleeve length is the second thing people get wrong: it is measured from the centre back neck, not from the shoulder, and the two numbers are not close.
What to inspect before it ships
Zips are the number one failure point in this category, so ask for a photo of the zip fully closed and one of the pull mechanism close up. After that, check the lining is attached at the hem rather than hanging loose, and that the shoulder seams sit symmetrically on a flat lay. A lining detached at the hem is annoying to fix and a strong signal about overall finishing.
Hardware and finishing details
Cheap hardware is where budget outerwear shows its age first: snaps that pull away from the fabric, drawstrings with plastic tips that crack, and storm flaps that do not sit flat. Ask QC photos specifically for hardware close-ups. These parts cost very little to get right, so a seller who cannot show them is telling you something about how the garment was specified.
